Nicolas Tagliafico (32) has agreed to sign a new two-year contract with Olympique Lyonnais, as per L’Équipe. The Argentine international, who was out of contract since 30th June, is now expected to return to pre-season training with the group in the coming hours.

Tagliafico had been keeping fit individually from Amsterdam in recent weeks while discussions over an extension continued. According to L’Équipe, OL never gave up hope of convincing the player to stay, despite interest from abroad.

The 2022 World Cup winner received more lucrative proposals from foreign clubs, but has opted to continue his adventure in Ligue 1. His new deal runs until 2027, with an optional extra year included. The decision marks a rare piece of good news in a constrained summer window for Lyon, whose spending remains under tight DNCG supervision.

Recruitment chief Matthieu Louis-Jean and his scouting unit, who have a long-standing relationship with the player, played a key role in getting the deal over the line.

Lyon now intend to step up efforts to bring in a first-choice goalkeeper to replace Lucas Perri, who has joined Leeds United. Talks are also ongoing with Brest midfielder Pierre Lees-Melou, while a wide player is also being targeted before the end of the window.GFFN | George Boxall
