Ademola Lookman starred for Nigeria as they secured a big win, whilst Sadio Mane was on target with an important goal for Senegal.
Here’s everything that happened yesterday at AFCON…
Benin bounced back from defeat to DR Congo in their opener with a victory over Botswana. It was a well-deserved win for Benin, and keeps their hopes of advancing alive. A tough final fixture against Senegal awaits them, but they remain with a chance of qualification.
Meanwhile two losses in two for Botswana means that they will not be advancing further in the tournament. They sit rock bottom of Group D, are yet to score a goal and have registered just one shot on target.
Undoubtedly the biggest match up in Group D, Senegal and DR Congo shared the points in a 1-1 draw. Senegal were on top for most of the game, but it was Cedric Bakambu who opened the scoring for DR Congo just after the hour mark. However, Sadio Mane was on hand to bring his side level just eight minutes later.
The draw leaves both countries in a strong position to advance, on four points with one game remaining. Ahead of the final fixture, Senegal are currently topping the group with a superior goal difference of +3 to DR Congo’s +1.
Uganda and Tanzania could not be split in Group C. After both losing their openers, the draw leaves neither country in a strong position to advance.
Both will face tricky fixtures in their final games. Uganda will meet Nigeria, whilst Tanzania will take on Tunisia next week.
Nigeria prevailed in the biggest clash in Group C, booking their place in the knockout stages. Goals from Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and Ademola Lookman gave the Super Eagles a three-goal lead. Lookman was man of the match, assisting twice alongside his goal.
Tunisia mounted a late challenge but could not comeback. They remain second in the group with three points and should still advance to the knockouts.
