John Obi Mikel
Nigerian football legend John Obi Mikel is in the running for federation president. The former Chelsea midfielder has outlined his top priorities.
Transparency and the fight against corruption: these are the key pillars on which John Obi Mikel wants to build his leadership at the helm of the Nigerian Football Federation. The former Super Eagles captain is determined to put an end to malpractice within the country's governing body.
"Once again, I don't want to be associated with corruption. I would never do that if I'm to say yes. If we want to move forward, things need to be done the right way. Put the right people in place, those who are heading in the same direction, so that when players return home to play, they find an environment where they can truly express themselves," Obi Mikel explained.
John Obi Mikel sees his experience across Nigeria's various national teams as a major asset in his bid for the presidency of the Nigerian Football Federation: "One thing I've always done since the very beginning is fight for my country. I don't know how many players have done what I have—from the U17s, the U20s, all the way to the senior national team. Years of sacrifice. I've never once refused to play for my country."
