Sunderland’s Premier League return at Portman Road mixed promise and pain, Nilson Angulo’s brilliant free-kick cancelling an early error before former winger Jack Clarke decided it for promoted Ipswich.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Sunderland opened talks with Jenson Seelt over a new contract to 2030. A loan after signing remained on the table, with interest in the Dutch defender from Serie A and the Bundesliga.
Régis Le Bris started Thomas Meunier despite only 45 pre-season minutes after World Cup duty. Hume pushed on the right, Angulo preferred to Chemsdine Talbi, with Romaine Mundle among the subs. O’Nien partnered Dan Ballard, while Omar Alderete and Nordi Mukiele were bench options, and Dayann Methalie missed out after Friday’s Toulouse move.
O’Nien’s error gifted Ipswich the opener, but Angulo levelled with a superb direct free-kick. He was the first since Marcos Alonso in 2021-22 to score his side’s first Premier League goal of a season that way, and it was Sunderland’s first such top-flight strike in over 10 years, after Patrick van Aanholt in May 2016.
Hume then endured a rough 68th minute, penalised for a foul throw to the delight of the home crowd. Clarke came on after the break and struck the winner against his old club, celebrating as Portman Road savoured it.
Angulo’s display also sparked a new chant from the away end, his name set to the tune once reserved for Julio Arca. Many will remember the Spandau Ballet-inspired Julio and A Love Supreme’s tribute single Hooolio.
