Nilson Angulo’s injury status has been clarified, with the Sunderland winger set to leave Ecuador’s camp and continue his recovery back on Wearside after a call-up Bolavip labelled 'controversial'. The 22-year-old remains out with a muscle tear.

He was a late omission before the 1-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on March 14, when Regis Le Bris said his lay-off might last four to six weeks.

Eight days later, his exclusion from the Tyne-Wear derby at Newcastle United was entirely expected.

Even so, he was named in Ecuador’s initial squad for friendlies against Morocco and the Netherlands during this international break.

On Thursday, Ecuador head coach Sebastián Beccacece confirmed Angulo will return to Sunderland to continue treatment. He is expected to leave camp on Saturday alongside midfielder Patrik Mercado, then fly back to England.

Beccacece described the absences as significant losses and added that the rest of his group are fit and healthy.
