Sunderland winger Nilson Angulo remains sidelined and, despite a surprise Ecuador call-up, his injury status has been clarified during the international break. Ecuador have friendlies this month against Morocco and the Netherlands.
He was an unexpected absentee for the 1-0 loss to Brighton on 14 March, when head coach Regis Le Bris said the problem might keep him out for four to six weeks. There was never a realistic chance of involvement in last weekend’s Tyne-Wear derby at Newcastle. According to Bolavip, his selection by Sebastián Beccacece was surprising and even controversial, adding that Angulo is usually first choice when fit and that the coach has made similar calls before.
Beccacece clarified on Thursday that Angulo will leave the national-team camp to continue treatment with Sunderland after sustaining a muscle tear.
The 22-year-old is expected to depart on Saturday, alongside midfielder Patrik Mercado of Independiente del Valle, before flying back to England.
Beccacece said the pair’s absence represents a notable loss and that the remainder of his squad are fit.
