Nilson Angulo is heading to the World Cup this summer after being named in Ecuador’s squad. The Sunderland forward, 22, has received his first call-up for the finals in the US, Mexico and Canada.
Sunderland Echo reports that the 12-cap international joined from Anderlecht for around £17.5 million in January and has been eased into Regis Le Bris's plans. He made nine appearances, featuring in the last three matches with starts at Everton and against Chelsea.
That finish helped Sunderland qualify for the Europa League next season. Earlier in the campaign, Le Bris said he thought Angulo would have a big impact on Wearside, while emphasising ongoing adaptation and a profile suited to the Premier League.
The head coach cited a tough experience at Bournemouth and praised the player's response as positive. He felt Angulo had been effective off the bench, adding that starting would be different and he hoped it would come good soon.
Ecuador’s squad also includes Piero Hincapie, Moises Caicedo and Enner Valencia.
