Tottenham came agonisingly close to rescuing a point despite finishing with nine men, but Liverpool eventually edged a dramatic 2-1 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spurs’ task was made far harder midway through the first half when Xavi Simons saw his yellow card upgraded to red following a VAR review for a reckless challenge on Virgil Van Dijk.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, the hosts remained competitive in a scrappy opening period that offered little in the way of clear chances.
The Reds took control after the break. Arne Slot’s decision to introduce Alexander Isak at half-time paid off almost immediately, with the striker sliding home in the 56th minute after being played through by Florian Wirtz. However, Isak was forced off shortly afterwards with an injury sustained in the move.
The visitors doubled their advantage just 10 minutes later when Hugo Ekitike rose well inside the box to guide Jeremie Frimpong’s delivery into the net, leaving Spurs facing an uphill battle.
Tottenham refused to fold and were rewarded seven minutes from time as substitute Richarlison reacted quickest from a corner to fire in from close range.
Any hopes of a late comeback were dented moments later when Cristian Romero picked up a second yellow card, reducing the hosts to nine.
Even then, Spurs pushed forward. Pedro Porro tested Alisson twice deep into stoppage time, including a fierce free-kick from distance, but Liverpool held firm to secure all three points.
The result leaves Thomas Frank's men 13th in the table after another frustrating home defeat, while Arne Slot's side climbed to fifth, level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea.
