At kick off of yesterday’s Chelsea – Brighton game, the commentator pointed out that the game had gained a little bit of spice as a sort of derby game.

Chelsea have bought so many players from their South Coast rivals that there is inevitably going to be some friction between the fanbases, and that spilled onto the pitch yesterday.

There were a number of former Seagulls getting abuse from the away fans – Marc Cucurella, Moises Caicedo and Joao Pedro all started the game. But things only got bad when Chelsea were down to ten men and losing. They then understandably started to try and waste time in the period where they had the lead, taking things up a notch.

One moment we all saw was Benoit Badiashile sparking a brawl by trying to lift a Brighton player to their feet. But closer to full time there was another spat which the cameras didn’t really capture. Caicedo got in the face of Jan Paul van Hecke and left him sprawling.

As always, players from both sides piled in. VAR reviewed the incident and didn’t give any punishment, so Nizaar Kinsella says retrospective action is “highly unlikely.”

Chelsea due serious punishment

This is a nasty incident and Chelsea are going to get fined for failing to control their players through the game. They’re already due a fine for the collection of reds and yellows from last week’s loss against Manchester United.

The players are losing their heads on the field and it’s costing the club money as well as points. There’s a lack of experience and maturity – Caicedo is supposed to be one of the leaders and he’s doing things like this.
