The debate surrounding Jamal Musiala and his role at the World Cup continues to gather pace. Shortly before Julian Nagelsmann’s official squad announcement, Dietmar Hamann has now also expressed clear doubts about the Bayern star’s participation in the World Cup
On Sky, the former international spoke out surprisingly clearly against the 23-year-old’s nomination: „I don’t think he can help the team at the moment. I don’t know if you’re doing the boy a favor by taking him along now,“ Hamann explained
From the TV pundit’s point of view, Musiala still lacks the decisive explosiveness that normally makes him a difference-maker
Hamann is particularly critical of the past few months following Musiala’s injury break: „Attacking players live from their dynamism and the ability to make something out of nothing, from the joy of playing. That is not to be seen at the moment,“ emphasized the 52-year-old
This also contradicts Hamann’s comparisons with former DFB stars such as Bastian Schweinsteiger and Sami Khedira, who played important roles at the 2014 World Cup despite physical problems
„They were central midfielders,“ Hamann argued, adding that the situation is completely different with Musiala

Hamann is particularly critical of Musiala’s performances in the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain. „He didn’t play well twice against Paris,“ explained the former Bayern professional
Nagelsmann can understandably wait a long time for a player like Musiala, but at some point the sporting performance has to be visible again
Hamann also made it clear that Musiala himself would probably never voluntarily give up a World Cup: „But he won’t say that because he wants to go to the World Cup.“
Hamann is not alone in his opinion: commentator legend Béla Réthy took the same line and made it clear that Musiala would not be a regular for him at the moment. „He’s not a game changer. He’s not ready yet,“ explained Réthy
At the same time, the former ZDF commentator was nevertheless in favor of a nomination – above all because of Musiala’s individual quality. „But I would take him along for the special moments,“ said Réthy
Despite the public doubts, a nomination for the Bayern star is still considered extremely likely. Julian Nagelsmann is still planning internally with Musiala as an important attacking player for the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico
However, the national coach is likely to be very careful not to overload the 23-year-old physically
One thing is clear: hardly any German player in top form can decide games on his own like Jamal Musiala, which is precisely why the DFB and FC Bayern hope that the attacking star will be back to his old strength by the time the tournament rolls around.
