No „Final dahoam“: April 2025 at FC Bayern in retrospect

April 2025 presented FC Bayern with a mixture of successes and setbacks. While the record champions collected important points in the Bundesliga, the Champions League ended in the quarter-finals.

Bayern kicked off the month with a 3:1 win at FC Augsburg. After going behind early on, Jamal Musiala, Harry Kane and an own goal turned the game in Munich’s favour. The first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Inter Milan followed a few days later. FC Bayern lost 2:1 at the Allianz Arena. Thomas Müller equalised in the meantime, but Davide Frattesi secured a late victory for the visitors shortly before the end.

They then faced Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, a top-of-the-table clash that ended 2-2 with Raphael Guerreiro and Serge Gnabry scoring for FCB. In the second leg against Inter, Bayern fought for a place in the semi-finals but were held to a 2-2 draw in Milan. Harry Kane and Eric Dier scored the goals, but there was no way of avoiding elimination in the quarter-finals.

It was particularly bitter that this year’s Champions League final took place in Munich – thus shattering the dream of a second „final dahoam“ after 2012 and late compensation for the bitter defeat against Chelsea FC back then.

Bayern remained stable in the league, however, with a commanding 4-0 win at 1. FC Heidenheim followed by a clear 3-0 home victory against FSV Mainz 05. Both were must-wins in the title race, which Bayern continued to lead with confidence.

Away from the pitch, April was also a month of remembrance. On 26 April, FC Bayern bid farewell to Fritz Scherer at the Allianz Arena. The former president and honorary vice-president passed away in mid-March at the age of 85. Scherer had shaped the club for decades in various management roles and was honoured at a memorial event.

April ended with a bitter end in the top flight, but also with clear signals in the Bundesliga and a moment of silent farewell.
