No looking back as Sunderland goalkeeper makes his league bow | OneFootball

Lee Burge ended up on the losing side over the weekend but was proud to make his league debut for Sunderland nonetheless.

The goalkeeper got the nod ahead of regular number one Jon McLaughlin as Phil Parkinson took charge of the Black Cats for the first time.

Signed from Coventry in the summer, Burge has impressed in the cup this season but had not been handed a chance in the league by ex-boss Jack Ross.

Despite ending up on the losing side, Burge made four saves as he impressed at Wycombe on Saturday.

“I loved making my league debut for Sunderland. It was a brilliant achievement for me and my family,” Burge said.

“It was really nice and made me feel really proud.

“But it’s also one of them where because we’ve lost the game it’s a bit of bittersweet one. We just have to pick ourselves up and go again on Tuesday night.”

Speaking about his league bow for the club, Burge insisted he won’t rest on his laurels now.

“I found out Friday morning when he [Parkinson] named the team. It was a nice surprise and it was lovely to make my league debut today,” the 26-year-old said.

“I’ve come here to do exactly what I have done. Really work hard and try and push Jon and do the best I can.

“I wanted to come here and have a new experience and I’m loving every second of it.”
