Alvaro Arbeloa’s time as Real Madrid head coach has come to an end, and his final night at the Bernabeu was as understated as it was unusual.

Real Madrid signed off on their domestic season with a 4-2 victory over Athletic Bilbao, a result that gave Arbeloa the send-off he perhaps deserved on the scoreboard.

The coach received a mixed reception from the stands, with a section of supporters showing their appreciation while others made their feelings known with whistles.

A low-key farewell

According to Diario SPORT, Arbeloa’s post-match presence was strikingly minimal. He appeared in photographs with his squad but remained firmly in the background throughout.

The Spaniard did not show any visible emotion or prominence that one might expect from a manager saying goodbye to a club.

The bigger surprise came in the press room. After Ernesto Valverde completed his media duties, it became clear that Arbeloa would not be appearing before the cameras. No press conference, no official farewell address, no explanation offered.

It was his last scheduled opportunity to speak publicly as Real Madrid head coach before Jose Mourinho’s appointment was formally confirmed, and he chose not to take it.

Questions left unanswered

His absence meant a string of uncomfortable questions went unasked.

This includes his relationship with Kylian Mbappe, Dani Carvajal and Dani Ceballos, which remained unaddressed.

Whether Arbeloa will issue a farewell statement through his personal social media channels remains unknown.

What is confirmed is that he will not continue at the club in any capacity, neither as head coach nor as part of the incoming coaching staff under Mourinho, whose own appointment is getting delayed due to the upcoming presidential elections.
