Barcelona coach Hansi Flick explained Frenkie de Jong’s absence against Mallorca confirming it was precautionary decision.
The absence of Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona’s recent match against Real Mallorca caused concern among fans especially given the midfielder’s regular role in the starting lineup.
Despite Barcelona securing comfortable victory, De Jong did not play even a few minutes.
After the final whistle, head coach Hansi Flick addressed the situation to calm fears about the player’s condition.
Flick confirmed that De Jong was left out as precautionary measure explaining that the Dutch midfielder was not at full physical capacity.
The coaching staff preferred not to take risks at this stage of the season especially with important matches coming up in several competitions.
Barcelona currently managing player fitness carefully aiming to avoid long-term injuries that could affect key players during decisive period of the campaign.
According to Spanish outlet AS, De Jong has been feeling minor pain in the groin area during recent training sessions.
The report stressed that the issue is very light and not considered serious.
The same source added that De Jong is expected to be available for first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final against Atletico Madrid scheduled for Thursday at the Metropolitano Stadium.
His place in the starting lineup is not seen as being at risk.
