Nordi Mukiele addressed Sunderland fans on Instagram after a half-time flashpoint during the 5-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland were 4-0 down at the break after a damaging first half, and tensions rose as the players headed for the tunnel, with Mukiele appearing to react to remarks from the stands. The player said in a post on Instagram.
Head coach Régis Le Bris acknowledged the incident and urged perspective, noting emotions can run high. He also underlined the strong backing from the crowd in the second half.
“A difficult night yesterday, but that’s football, with its ups and downs,” Mukiele wrote. He said the priority is to stand up and go again with a different mindset, adding he would be back next week.
Le Bris described the loss as painful. He said Sunderland were punished for a drop in standards before the interval, improved their energy in the second half, then became stretched late on as Forest added a fifth.
Pundit Jamie Redknapp viewed the moment as frustration in the context of 4-0 at half-time. He said the focus then was to get inside quickly, regroup and try to make an impact after the restart.
