Six Nordic football federations have declared they no longer have confidence in FIFA president Gianni Infantino and are demanding sweeping governance reform. The announcement came in a joint statement on Sunday.
Meeting in Helsinki, the associations of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the Faroe Islands issued a rare unified message backing calls for Infantino to resign from UEFA, the AFC and CONCACAF. According to L'Équipe, those regional bodies have also raised the prospect of a vote of no confidence.
The Nordic federations also backed an independent investigation into Infantino’s proposal to sell a stake in events such as the World Cup to private equity investors, a plan quickly shelved after a global backlash.
They expressed concern over FIFA’s governance and decision-making at the highest level and said they stood with UEFA.
The six urged FIFA to commission a full, independent review of its governance framework to test whether it delivers the independence, checks and balances, transparency and accountability envisaged by the 2016 reform programme. On Friday, Denmark’s FA said it would work to find a credible alternative to Infantino for next year’s election.
