Northampton will want a repeat of Callum Morton's spell, but it won't come in the form of the current Cobblers player.
Callum Morton's 2019/20 loan move to Northampton Town was a huge success and Jon Brady will be looking to replicate that move in January.
Such a deal won't involve the striker specifically, as he is on loan at the club but set to miss the rest of the season due to injury.
Instead, Northampton will be looking to replicate the success of Morton's first loan by bringing in a player of a similar profile this winter window.
His initial loan spell was a huge success. He played a significant role in firing Cobblers to promotion to League One.
The 24-year-old scored eight goals in 12 games, including two play-off semi-final goals and a superb effort in the final.
Brady wanted a pressing forward of Morton's style this summer, which ultimately led to the striker's return to the club on loan from Salford City.
However, a knee injury has left the striker out for the season, so the manager will be on the lookout for a similar option as the January window approaches.
Cobblers are short of options at the top of the pitch, even after signing Martyn Waghorn on a free transfer, Tom Eaves has impressed but is lacking a pacier option to feed off his hold-up play.
Northampton possessed a pacier pressing option in Morton, but now need a player of a similar profile to partner the more direct, target man option, which is Eaves.
Brady's side have only scored one goal in their last three games and are struggling to sync up top with the current options struggling to find the same wavelength as Tyler Roberts in particular.
Cobblers' attack is showing signs of promise but seems as though it's lacking a settled setup and could be missing the final piece of the jigsaw to bring it all together.
It is a shame that Morton has picked up a serious injury so soon after his return to Northampton, having not had the chance to strike relationships with Eaves, Roberts, and Tariqe Fosu.
Roberts' quality and directness and Eaves' hold-up play demands a second striker or winger who is willing to run in behind so Northampton must persevere to add a player of this profile in January.
Birmingham loanee Roberts has attempted to lead the line in recent weeks but the lack of support and pace around him makes his order slightly too tall, even for a player of his class.
With Eaves returning it's a shame that Morton isn't on hand to slot in as the final piece of the puzzle which he showed in his 2019/20 spell. Northampton were in a similar position with their attacking play that season and he pushed them to a play-off spot with some stellar performances.
Cobblers will have to offload some of their squad if they are to make a move, though, having hit the squad limit, loan players Matt Dibley-Dias and Luke Mbete could return to their parent clubs, but Salford may not oblige in welcoming Morton back.
Should Northampton find a forward of a similar profile who's in a similar moment to Morton at that time, they could well hit their straps for the Cobblers by working around the high-quality trio of Eaves, Roberts and Fosu.
