Sunderland AFC issued a statement condemning racist abuse aimed at Brian Brobbey on social media after Sunday’s game, adding that the club stands firmly with the striker and offers him full and unwavering support.

The club said this was not an isolated incident, pointing to recent abuse directed at Romaine Mundle and Lutsharel Geertruida, and highlighting the ongoing and unacceptable frequency of such behaviour inside stadiums and online.

Northumbria Police said it condemns all forms of discrimination and would look to take swift and appropriate action against offenders.
