The Norwegian Football Federation’s president, Lise Klaveness, said on Friday she will ask FIFA president Gianni Infantino to resign immediately, arguing he no longer has the institutional confidence to lead through the current turmoil.

She said the decision followed a meeting of the federation’s leadership on Thursday, adding there is no way back for Infantino and that the organisation needs stability and trust.

Infantino has led FIFA since 2016 and, for now, is the only declared candidate for re-election in March, a vote that requires a majority of the 211 member associations.

He has been mired in crisis since the failure of his plan to open the body to private investors, and he faces pressure from UEFA, which has 55 members, and Concacaf, which comprises 35 federations.

Klaveness said that, given the present chaos, he can no longer be the figure to bring stakeholders together.

Some, including former FIFA president Sepp Blatter, have floated Klaveness, 45, as a possible successor, which would make her the first woman to lead the organisation. She said that is not the focus, stressing the priority is the issues at hand and declining to discuss herself.
