Supporters travelling to Wednesday's Championship fixture by train have been given a major boost

Supporters of Norwich City and Birmingham City attending Wednesday night's clash at Carrow Road by train have been handed a major boost well in advance of kick-off.

Indeed, it has been confirmed by Greater Anglia trains that an extra service will be running from Norwich station in the direction of London Liverpool Street post-match after conversations were held between themselves and representatives of the Canaries.

Norwich and Birmingham have endured rather intriguing starts to the 2026/27 season after missing out on a place in last season's play-offs, although many may have expected more from Philippe Clement's side given the form which they showcased after the Belgian was appointed last November.

The East Anglian side have begun their campaign with two wins and three defeats from their first five matches, although they are still without the services of some key performers.

Meanwhile from Birmingham's perspective, they travel from the West Midlands with an unbeaten Championship record on the line, although they have only won one of their first five encounters.

Naturally, a strong following is expected from the Second City outfit, which has also perhaps influenced the aforementioned decision from local transport authorities.

The match between Norwich and Birmingham is just one of three Championship clashes taking place on Wednesday night, with the early-season schedule also impacted by EFL Cup encounters.

Approximately 163 miles separates Blues' home of St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park and Carrow Road, whilst midweek matches are notorious for causing post-match travel issues due to a lack of resources or potential roadworks at various points.

However, with plenty of home supporters based outside of Norwich, either in Norfolk, Suffolk or around London, Greater Anglia have added a 22:27 service, which will terminate at London Liverpool Street at 00:30 on Thursday, after the previously final service was set to leave Norwich at 22:02, leaving hardly any time for spectators to leave Carrow Road for the train station in advance.

“We know this match is very important to our customers, which is why we are running this additional train," said Greater Anglia's Group Station Manager, James Reeve.

“We have worked with Norwich City Football Club to identify and respond to customer demand, and this additional service is a direct result of that partnership working."

It is around three hours from Birmingham to Norwich by car, which is a fairly arduous journey midweek when taking the A14 into account, and those opting to travel by train from the Second City aren't going to benefit from the aforementioned decision unless they are based in London permanently or for the night.

Blues have sold out all 2,002 away tickets, but with no direct trains running from Norwich to Birmingham New Street and the final train which involves a connection at Peterborough departing 13 minutes after kick-off, driving or coach travel will be the only feasible option for visiting supporters.

The club's official coaches are set to depart St. Andrew's at 1:45PM on Wednesday, which allows plenty of time to travel to East Anglia, traffic permitting.

As well as looking to build on successive victories against Burnley and Sheffield United, Norwich will be out for revenge against Birmingham based on how the two encounters panned out in 2025/26.
