Charlton Athletic have confirmed the signing of Onel Hernandez as a free agent following his exit from Norwich City earlier this year.

The 32-year-old was without a team, but has agreed a deal with the Addicks on a short-term basis.

The London outfit have made a promising start to life back in the Championship, with Nathan Jones’ side earning 11 points from their first seven games since gaining promotion from League One.

Hernandez featured 23 times for the Canaries in the second division last season, contributing three assists.

However, he ended his time at Carrow Road with the expiration of his contract, which has opened the door for a move to Charlton.

When asked about Hernandez’s move to Charlton, FLW’s Norwich fan pundit Zeke Downes claimed that it’s a good move for both parties.

He believes that the forward is still capable of competing in the Championship, and that he’ll make for a good addition to Jones’ side as an option off the bench against tired legs.

“I think it’s a really good move for both him and Charlton, because obviously he’s been looking for a club and he’s been wanting one that’s at a high enough level that he thinks he’s at,” Downes told Football League World.

“He obviously rates himself that he still thinks he can do a job in this league, and I think he is able to.

“I don’t know in terms of what form.

“I think he is really good as a sub, like bringing him on against tired legs and I think for Charlton, having a guy that’s got his experience, and the fact he has won the league twice, I think it’ll be a massive thing for them.

“They’ve started the league quite well, so they’re just looking to boost their squad, which I think it’ll be a really good match.”

Downes has highlighted what Hernandez will bring to the Addicks, crediting him with a strong work ethic and passion that should endear him to supporters: “But they should expect a player that is going to give everything.

“He has always and he will always give everything, work very hard, he will run and run.

“He’s quick and strong, very passionate and hard working.

“In terms of output, hasn’t really offered that enough, he probably is better at shooting than he is things like crossing and being a bit more creative.

“But, maybe it does depend on the players that they have, if they have a guy in the middle that can win headers, whereas we never had that really.

“I think it’s a really good move for him and the club.”

Charlton have made a very positive start to the new season, with Jones’ side picking up positive results against the likes of Sheffield United, Blackburn Rovers and Watford.

The Addicks will be keen to avoid any kind of relegation battle, with their sights set on solidifying their place in the second tier.

The London outfit gained promotion through the play-offs last season, earning their return to this level for the first time since 2020.

Next up for Charlton is a trip to Pride Park to face Derby County on Tuesday evening in an 8pm kick-off.

Onel Hernandez deal has potential for Charlton

Hernandez wasn’t quite able to maintain his place as a key part of the Norwich squad by the end of his time at Carrow Road.

However, he is still capable of competing at a Championship level, and could prove a very smart short-term addition for Jones’ side.

It’s been a very positive start to life back at this level, and it’s encouraging for supporters that the club aren’t resting on their laurels at all.

Given the free agents out there at the moment, Hernandez could prove a very smart move over the coming months.
