Notts County could be vulnerable to losing striker Alassana Jatta this summer after failing to win promotion from League Two.

It was a season that promised so much for Notts County, but after missing out on automatic promotion on the final day of the campaign, they suffered further agony as they were beaten 2-0 on aggregate by eventual winners AFC Wimbledon in their play-off semi-final.

Head coach Stuart Maynard paid the price for his side's play-off defeat as he was sacked after just over 15 months in charge last Thursday, but he may not be the only high-profile departure at Meadow Lane this summer, and Jatta could potentially follow him out of the exit door.

Jatta joined the Magpies from Danish side Viborg last January for a fee of just over £100,000, and he netted 22 goals in 43 appearances in all competitions this season, finishing as the second-highest scorer in League Two behind Bromley's Michael Cheek.

Plymouth Argyle had a £750,000 bid rejected for Jatta in January, while Portsmouth and Bolton Wanderers were also keen, and as FLW exclusively revealed this week, the Lancashire outfit have reignited their interest in the striker ahead of the summer transfer window.

When asked if he believes Jatta will leave the club this summer, FLW's Notts County fan pundit Gareth Parr said that he expects the Magpies board to wait until the start of next season to decide whether to sell the Gambia international, but he admitted that he has been unsettled at Meadow Lane since speculation about his future began in January.

"Whether Jatta goes or stays will purely come down to finances I think," Gareth said.

"He's obviously not been happy for whatever reason since the approaches.

"The owners make all their decisions based on statistics, but I think he's not done himself any favours with his antics in the play-off semi-final.

"Personally, I think they will give him an opportunity to stay for a bit, see how he performs in the first few games of next season and make a decision after that.

"Unless, of course, like with Macaulay Langstaff and Millwall, if someone comes in with a really decent offer, then I'm sure he will just go."

Notts County will fear Macaulay Langstaff repeat with Alassana Jatta

Jatta's record of 27 goals in 53 appearances at Meadow Lane means that he has averaged more than one goal every two games for Notts County, so it is easy to see why he is attracting interest from elsewhere.

The striker's form did decline a little in the second half of the season, and his late red card in the play-off semi-final first leg against Wimbledon did not go down well with Magpies supporters, but there is no doubt it would be a huge blow for the club if they were to lose their star striker for a second consecutive year after Macaulay Langstaff's departure to Millwall last summer.

However, like with Langstaff, it may be difficult for Notts to prevent Jatta from making the move to a higher level, although it remains to be seen whether Bolton will be willing to meet his valuation, which is thought to be in excess of £1 million.
