Barcelona coach Hansi Flick hailed the performance of Lamine Yamal following the Catalan side’s thrilling 5-3 victory away to Real Betis on Saturday in La Liga matchday 16.

While the headlines centred on Ferran Torres first half hat trick, Flick singled out Yamal’s growth, particularly his defensive contribution.. something the coach has demanded from him in recent weeks.

Speaking in the post match press conference, Flick said:

“I really appreciated what I saw from Lamine Yamal today. Yes, he scored but what impressed me were his defensive interventions, three or four moment when he recovered the ball. That is exactly what I want to see from him every match.”

The German highlighted the teenager’s chemistry with Swedish youngster Roony Bardghji who also scored, saying:

“His understanding with Rony was excellent. There were some beautiful moments between them. But the defensive effort.. that was amazing for me.”

Yamal’s performance by the numbers

The 17 year old scored Barcelona’s fifth goal in the 59 minute from the penalty spot and posted highly positive statistics:

  • Match rating: 8.5/10 (just behind Torres’ 8.6)
  • Shots on target: 1
  • Touches inside opposition box: 6
  • One of the most dangerous Barca players in the final third
