FLW's West Brom fan pundit discussed Tyrese Campbell's recent links with the club
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
West Brom have recently emerged as one of the six clubs interested in a move for Tyrese Campbell following his recent Stoke City exit.
The 24-year-old departed the bet365 Stadium when his contract expired at the end of the 2023/24 season, and he is now on the hunt for a new club, with the striker not short of interest so far.
According to the Daily Mail, the Baggies face competition from the likes of Cardiff City, Sheffield United, Preston, QPR and Scottish giants Rangers to sign the 24-year-old, so Campbell certainly isn't short of options as he weighs up his next move.
The Campbell family have history at The Hawthorns with Tyrese's late father, Kevin, playing for West Brom during the 2005/06 season.
The former Manchester City academy man endured a tough 2023/24 campaign as injuries meant he missed 23 league games, half of the Championship fixtures, and he'll be hoping that a fresh start can help kickstart his career this summer.
After reaching the play-offs last season, the Baggies will be hoping for another successful season, and with the league looking more open this time around, a good transfer window could see them in contention for promotion.
FLW's West Brom fan pundit, Matt Smith, believes that the Baggies may need a more prolific goalscorer than Campbell, but can see the romance in the move given his father's spell at the club.
Speaking to Football League World, Matt said: "Tyrese Campbell would be a signing that I’m not too sure about if I’m completely honest.
“Put it this way, there are probably a couple of question marks in regards to his fitness record, he’s missed a lot of football, question marks around his best position and question marks over his goalscoring record, which isn’t out of this world.
“We don’t really have a goalscorer, and one of the things we’re looking for is a goalscorer, but I’m not sure he will provide that.
“From a romantic point of view, it would be nice to see him follow in his dad’s footsteps after his sad passing in the summer. It would have a fairytale romantic element, which would be nice.”
There's no denying that Campbell has the tools to be a success at Championship level, as shown by five clubs chasing his signature this summer, but he needs better luck with injuries to reach his full potential.
As mentioned previously, the 24-year-old played just 23 games last season, half of their Championship fixtures, and scored just three times, with two of those coming in the final two games of the season.
Campbell has scored 31 goals in 142 Championship appearances, so despite struggling with injuries, he's still a very experienced player at this level, especially when you consider that he's only 24.
The former England U20 international has never scored more than nine goals in a Championship season, so he may not be the prolific goalscorer that West Brom need, but he'd be playing in a better side at the Baggies than he was at Stoke.
Stoke has been a difficult place for players to find form since their relegation from the Premier League in 2018, and Campbell is probably one of a few players that emerged from the Potteries with any sort of credit.
Given his age and status as a free agent, he's almost certainly worth a punt by the Baggies this summer, and they could be the ones to help get Campbell's career back on track after a tough couple of years.
