'Not too concerned' - Luton Town claim made on Plymouth Argyle deal amid Celtic transfer talk

FLW's Luton Town fan pundit has given his verdict on whether it was a mistake to sell striker Aribim Pepple to Plymouth Argyle.

It is fair to say that striker Aribim Pepple's move from Luton Town to Plymouth Argyle raised a few eyebrows.

Pepple joined Luton from Canadian side Cavalry FC in the summer of 2022, but he never made a senior appearance for the Hatters, and he spent much of his time at Kenilworth Road out on loan.

The 23-year-old had loan spells with Grimsby Town, Bromley, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Southend United and Chesterfield, scoring five goals in 23 appearances to help the latter reach the League Two play-offs last season.

Despite impressing during some of his temporary stints away from the club, Luton opted to cash in on Pepple in the summer when they sold him to Plymouth for an initial fee of £250,000, which could rise to £600,000.

It initially looked as though the Hatters were the winners of the deal as Pepple scored just twice for the Pilgrims in the first half of the season, but the striker has been in outstanding form since the turn of the year, and he has now reached double figures for the season.

Pepple's goals have helped Argyle climb away from the League One relegation zone and towards the play-off places, but it seems his exploits at Home Park have not gone unnoticed, with reports emerging this week claiming that Scottish giants Celtic are monitoring both him and team-mate Lorent Tolaj.

When asked whether the club made a mistake by selling Pepple, FLW's Luton Town fan pundit Simon Mills insisted he has no regrets about the deal, despite the striker's form for Plymouth and recent links with Celtic, and he claimed that the decision to offload Joe Taylor to Huddersfield Town last January for a fee of over £3 million was more frustrating.

"I'm not too concerned about when we sold Pepple, to be fair," Simon told FLW.

"He was a youth team prospect at best at that point, and he just simply was not going to get in the team last season ahead of Carlton Morris and Elijah Adebayo.

"I just didn't see enough of him or hear enough about him around the club at the time.

"I don't think you'll find too many Luton fans who were sad that Pepple went out.

"There may be some who say 'look at our striker issues now', but I would say that it was a bigger disappointment to sell Joe Taylor than it was to sell Pepple.

"I was a big fan of Taylor, I still am, I think he's an excellent footballer."

Having paid a six-figure fee for a player who had never played at League One level, many questioned Plymouth's decision to sign Pepple in the summer, particularly as he had been deemed surplus to requirements by one of their promotion rivals.

However, the signing of Pepple now looks like a masterstroke from the Pilgrims amid his fine recent form, and not only does the reported initial £250,000 fee now appear to be something of a bargain, but they could also make a significant profit on that figure in the future as Celtic circle.

At the start of the season, it seemed as though Luton had enough depth in the striker department to cover the loss of Pepple, but Nahki Wells and Ali Al-Hamadi have both struggled for goals, while Jerry Yates has even been sent out on loan, so there may be growing regret at Kenilworth Road about the decision to sell him.
