The Red Devils made a lively start to the game, but Phil Foden nodded home the opener after being brilliantly set up by Jeremy Doku early in the first half.

City doubled their advantage on 53 minutes when Erling Braut Haaland held off Luke Shaw before chipping the ball over the goalkeeper.

Haaland added another on 68 minutes with an unerring finish to wrap up a 3-0 success for the hosts.

Former United captain Neville blasted the team’s display at full-time.

He said on Sky Sports: “I think there will be some pressure applied to the manager and his rigidity of sticking with the system.

“There have been times when I have seen United lose this type of match when I feel angry and frustrated. I feel nothing, which is even worse. This has been a nothing of a performance.

“With Chelsea next week, another defeat and big questions would start to be asked.

“I’m worried about the manager, I’m worried about what’s going to happen in the next few weeks. I don’t think it’s a time for panic, but I’ve seen this before, we’ve seen this film.”

There was plenty of excitement among United supporters after their impressive summer transfer window.

However, the excitement has dissipated, with the team picking up just four points from four Premier League matches and conceding seven goals.

Ruben Amorim’s side had a perfect opportunity to register maximum points against City, who had lost their previous two matches and were dealing with several injury issues.

But they produced a poor display at the Etihad and deservedly came away with nothing.

Amorim received heavy backing in the summer. He must start delivering results soon, or he could be sacked.
