Nottingham Forest captain Ryan Yates has been ruled out of Saturday’s Premier League opener against Leeds United, with defender Nicolo Savona also unavailable.

Leeds visit the City Ground for a three pm kick-off in Oliver Glasner’s first competitive match in charge. The club said in a statement that the head coach confirmed Yates and Savona will not make the matchday squad.

Yates missed Forest’s final pre-season friendly against Brest. Savona, the young Italian, ended last season early after knee surgery in March.

Forest still have 23 fit players, meaning five will miss out on selection. Squad places will be decided by tomorrow after pre-season assessments.

Savona has had a minor setback, with his knee reacting to the workload. He is working in the gym before returning to the grass and may need a couple of weeks.
