Nottingham Forest claim fourth win of the season with comeback against Southampton

Nottingham Forest continued their impressive start to life in Barclays WSL2 with a 3-2 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium this afternoon.

Charlie Wellings’ late double saw Carly Davies’ side come from behind and snatch what had seemed like an unlikely victory on the South Coast.

Southampton created the early pressure and they carved out two close chances within the opening five minutes. A Jess Simpson free-kick went just over the top of Emily Batty’s goal before Atlanta Primus hit the crossbar after capitalising on a Nottingham Forest defensive error.

The visitors then took the lead through Nahikari Garcia who scored her second goal of the season. After Fran Stenson had saved the initial attempt from Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, The Saints keeper was unable to prevent Garcia’s close-range tap-in from the rebound.

Just before the break, Nottingham Forest conceded a free-kick which led to Southampton finding an equaliser. Mary Bashford found the back of Batty’s goal through the resulting set-piece.

Southampton started the stronger of the two sides after the break and they eventually found their second goal of the afternoon through Simpson. Her header found the far top corner of Batty’s goal.

Nottingham Forest responded well and they equalised in the 84th minute through second half substitute Wellings. She scored her first goal of the season, slotting the ball past Stenson.

Shortly after the equaliser, Wellings found another. She was assisted by Rachel Rowe again, as she found the bottom corner of the net for the second time.

Both sides continued to search for further goals in added time, but the game ended 3-2 to the visitors.

Both sides are back in action next weekend. Southampton travel to Charlton Athletic while Nottingham Forest play host to Birmingham City.
