Nottingham Forest are said to be targeting Auxerre captain Kevin Danois as the transfer deadline nears. With a quieter finish likely, the focus is on quality over quantity.

According to L’Equipe, Forest have made the 22-year-old a "top" target for the final days of the window. A fee in excess of €30 million, around £25m, is being touted, with Crystal Palace also interested and no bids submitted yet. Even so, the report claims Forest are close to signing the French midfielder.

Danois has been named Auxerre captain this season and is under contract until 2029. The French club want to keep him.

Oliver Glasner’s reign began with a 1-0 defeat to Leeds United on Saturday. With ambitions of climbing the Premier League, Forest need to ensure he has a strong squad.

Strengthening midfield has been on the agenda this summer, but the picture has shifted. Forest have added Xaver Schlager, and this week Glasner indicated further reinforcements in that area are not a priority.

He has identified James McAtee as capable in a deeper role, starting him alongside Ibrahim Sangare against Leeds. After the game, Glasner said only two further signings are required before 1 September, a striker and a right-back.
