Nottingham Forest have confirmed the swift appointment of Sean Dyche as their new head coach following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou.

The 54-year-old takes charge at the City Ground shortly after the dismissal of Postecoglou, who was relieved of his duties after only 39 days just minutes following Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat by Chelsea in the Premier League.

Dyche is Forest’s third full-time manager of the season already, with Nuno Espirito Santo having also been sacked last month before replacing Graham Potter at West Ham.

He had been out of work since being sacked by Everton in January after less than two years in charge and only hours before an FA Cup tie against Peterborough, previously spending a decade at Burnley and overseeing two Premier League promotions and a top-half finish as the division’s longest-serving manager before being dismissed in April 2022.

Former centre-back Dyche began his managerial career at Watford and already has a previous affinity with Forest as a player, having come through the youth system as a youngster when Brian Clough was in charge before leaving in 1990 without making a senior appearance.

Forest legends Ian Woan and Steve Stone are long-time members of Dyche’s backroom team and will join him at the City Ground.

The club said they conducted a thorough recruitment process led by head of football Edu and technical director George Syrianos, with Forest also said to have made contact with former Manchester City head coach Roberto Mancini amid ongoing links to Fulham’s Marco Silva - who previously worked under Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis at Olympiacos - and ex-manager Steve Cooper, who recently took charge of Danish side Brondby.

Dyche will be tasked with quickly steering 18th-place Forest out of the relegation zone, with the club winning just one and losing five of their eight league matches so far this term, despite finishing seventh last season and being bumped up from the Conference League to the Europa League following Crystal Palace’s controversial demotion.

Postecoglou failed to win any of his eight games across all competitions during a disastrous 39-day spell that goes down as the shortest full-time managerial reign in Premier League history, surpassing Les Reed, who was sacked after only 40 days at Charlton between November and December 2006.

Dyche’s first game in charge of Forest arrives quickly on Thursday night as they host Portuguese giants Porto in the Europa League, followed by a trip to high-flying Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday.

His first home league match at the helm is against Manchester United on November 1.
