Nottingham Forest defender Nicolo Savona could miss the rest of the season, with the Italian set to undergo knee surgery.

Boss Vitor Pereira explained that after allowing the injury to settle, they have now decided that surgery is the best course of action.

“I think tomorrow (Tuesday) is the surgery,” he said. “He needs to have surgery. I really don’t know (if he’ll play again this season). After the surgery they (the medical staff) will say something and will inform us, but it is difficult.”

Pereira also spoke about his goalkeeping dilemma in the build-up to the 2-1 loss to Brighton on Sunday.

Both Matz Sels and Stefan Ortega have been dealing with injuries, with Sels having to be rushed back as back-up option Ortega was also injured.

John Victor is also out until the end of the season.

On the decision-making process before the game, Pereira said: “We had a conversation with Sels trying to explain that we need him in this moment. We know it’s not the time because he needed a few more days to be fit and in shape but in the end, he’s a leader.

“He has a strong character and he wants to help the team so he decided to accept the challenge and take the risk between him, me and the medical department to play the game.”
