Nottingham Forest have instructed Edu Gaspar, their global head of football, to stay away from the club as his exit edges closer after less than eight months in post.

Telegraph reports that Edu has been told not to attend either the training ground or the City Ground, and that he missed the 2-2 draw with Manchester City on Wednesday, his third successive absence.

Appointed in July, his spell has proved turbulent amid four different managers and a series of poor signings during a £200m spending spree.

Owner Evangelos Marinakis hired him to apply his experience across the portfolio, overseeing recruitment, performance, squad strategy and player development, but the project has disappointed. His departure is expected before the end of the season, though Forest insist he is working as normal.

Former manager Nuno Espírito Santo fell out with Edu within weeks, a breakdown viewed as a major contributory factor behind Nuno’s dismissal in September. He was followed by Ange Postecoglou, then Sean Dyche and now Vítor Pereira.

Dyche was sacked last month after 114 days and has called the decision a head-scratcher, later saying he could not understand the choices made at the club.

Forest sit 17th in the Premier League, outside the bottom three on goal difference, with nine matches left to avoid the drop. Pereira’s side return to the Europa League next Thursday for a round-of-16 first leg at home to FC Midtjylland.
