Leeds United’s relegation rivals Nottingham Forest reached a first European semi-final in 42 years, but the victory brought a triple injury setback and two extra matches in an already tight Premier League survival push.

As reported by yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Forest must now juggle Europe with the run-in. Fifth-bottom and three points behind Leeds, they hosted FC Porto on Thursday in a Europa League quarter-final second leg.

With the tie level at 1-1, Jan Bednarek’s late, high challenge on Chris Wood prompted a VAR review and a straight red from referee Danny Makkelie eight minutes before the opener.

Morgan Gibbs-White struck on 12 minutes for a 1-0 win on the night and 2-1 on aggregate, setting up an all-English semi-final with Aston Villa, who beat Bologna 7-1 on aggregate. Wood played on briefly, then went off on 16 minutes for Igor Jesus.

Murillo and Callum Hudson-Odoi were also forced off with muscular problems as Forest protected their advantage to the break and full time.

They return at 2pm on Sunday at home to Burnley, the first of six league games left. The Europa League semi-final first leg is at the City Ground on Thursday 30 April, the return at Villa Park on Thursday 7 May.

The first leg falls six days after the Friday night Premier League clash at Sunderland and four days before the Monday night league trip to Chelsea. The second leg comes three days after the Stamford Bridge clash, then Newcastle United visit on the Sunday.
