Nottingham Forest’s Nicolo Savona is set to undergo knee surgery on Tuesday, leaving his chances of playing again this season in doubt. The 22-year-old Italian has been out since mid-January after a training-ground problem failed to respond to rest.
According to NY Times, head coach Vitor Pereira said the operation is planned for Tuesday and he could not say whether Savona will return this season, with clarity only expected after surgery. He was speaking on Monday before Wednesday’s visit to Manchester City.
Savona last featured in the 1-0 Europa League defeat in Braga. Since arriving from Juventus in August for £11.2 million, he has made 20 appearances in all competitions, including 15 starts, and scored two Premier League goals.
Matz Sels is expected to be ready to face City. The Belgium international returned sooner than anticipated from a groin problem to play against Brighton and required on-pitch treatment.
Sels was pressed into action because Stefan Ortega suffered a calf injury against Fenerbahce last week. Sels is working to regain power in his leg and feels okay, and there is hope he will be available for the next game, while Ortega is thought to be out for a few more days. The player, head coach and medical staff agreed to take the risk for him to play.
