Nottingham Forest’s season has swung from European hopes to another relegation fight, with eight Premier League games left and a trip to Tottenham on Sunday. It is their third survival scrap since promotion in 2022.
According to NY Times, Vitor Pereira’s team sit above the bottom three on goal difference, just ahead of West Ham led by Nuno Espirito Santo, who started the campaign at Forest. He is still seeking a first league win.
This turbulence stems from Nuno’s clash with the hierarchy, notably global head of football Edu, over recruitment. Damage from three tenures, in Nuno, Ange Postecoglou and Sean Dyche, is now Pereira’s to repair.
The financial gap to the EFL is stark. Relegation typically cuts income by 46%, only partly cushioned by parachute money, £49m in year one and £40m in year two last season.
Forest’s last accounts were buoyed by about £100m of player sales, with Evangelos Marinakis converting significant debts to equity. A UEFA report last month forecast a £79m loss in the next accounts, which would bring financial, not points, sanctions.
Edu is expected to leave after a £200m intake underwhelmed, despite bright spells for Igor Jesus, Jair Cunha and Omari Hutchinson. To meet rules, Forest may sell a key asset, and believe Elliot Anderson could be worth up to £100m.
Relegation would demand more than one sale, but Forest are unlikely to sanction a cut-price fire sale.
