FLW's Notts County fan pundit has given his verdict on the impact of summer signing Matthew Dennis
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Notts County have made a solid start to the new League Two season as the club eyes promotion to League One this year.
The Magpies are currently inside the play-off places after the opening nine games of the campaign, having earned 14 points.
New signing Matthew Dennis has been one of the bright sparks up to this point, with the 23-year-old scoring six goals from eight appearances.
The forward earned the player of the month award for August, and only Aaron Drinan has scored more from these opening weeks of the campaign.
Notts County will be hoping he can maintain this form throughout the year, which could cement his status as one of the signings of the summer window in League Two.
When asked if Dennis already has a claim for being the bargain of the summer, FLW’s Notts County fan pundit Gareth Parr claimed the potential is certainly there.
He expressed his fear that Dennis might be targeted by defenders due to his good start to the season, but suggested the team have enough dangerous attacking outlets to be able to handle that.
“Dennis came in on a free, so there’s definitely potential for him to be the biggest bargain signing in League Two this summer,” Parr told Football League World
“What I hope it doesn’t mean is the fact that he’s got Player of the Month for August that he doesn’t end up with a massive target on his back.
“We’ve already seen him being targeted at Gillingham a couple of weeks ago, which meant he missed last week.
“The good advantage is we seem to have a prolific group of scorers.
“We don’t want to become one-dimensional, which has happened in the past.
“Obviously, it means it’s more difficult for opposition clubs to target us, so hopefully he can continue building his partnership with [Alassana] Jatta and go on to score more goals.”
Notts County were unable to earn promotion to League One last season after coming sixth in the table. A play-off semi-final defeat to AFC Wimbledon consigned them to another year in the fourth tier.
Next up for Martin Paterson’s side is a trip to face Crewe Alexandra on 27 September in a 12.30pm kick-off.
David McGoldrick (pictured above) was a key figure in the last couple of seasons, so replacing his goals was a necessary step this summer in order to maintain a strong competitive level.
Dennis making a good case for being his replacement, adding goals back to the side that were lost when the ex-Ireland international departed.
His absence after the Gillingham game does raise some concerns, but if the Magpies can remain an attacking threat without him then he might not be targeted so much by defenders.
