Manchester City have come to the realisation that Champions League qualification is not something to take for granted, Jeremy Doku has seemingly admitted.
Pep Guardiola and his players remain far from certain over their fate in next season’s Champions League, as they continue to fight for a top-five finish in this season’s Premier League table.
Manchester City secured themselves a huge result last time out in the top-flight as they scored in injury time courtesy of Matheus Nunes to record a 2-1 win over top-five rivals Aston Villa, while this week has handed a further golden opportunity after Nottingham Forest’s defeat.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side fell to a 0-2 home loss at the hands of Brentford to follow their FA Cup semi-final loss to the Etihad Stadium club at Wembley, meaning a greater gap could be opened up between City and the City Ground side.
And speaking to Manchester City’s official club website this week, Jeremy Doku has admitted that the club have learned that qualification for the UEFA Champions League is certainly not an achievement to be taken for granted or to be expected.
“This year we’ve really understood that qualifying for the Champions League isn’t something you just do every year. Now we can really see how difficult it is to be in the top four. In fact, it’s not easy,” Doku admitted.
“Every year it gets harder. There are teams like Nottingham Forest this year. Teams who come from nowhere, who are also there and who everyone wants to beat for the Champions League.
“And that’s where we really see how important it is to be at the same level every year,” he continued.
“Fortunately, there are five places. We’re still in the driving seat.
“There are four games left and it’s up to us to win all of them to make sure we’re in the Champions League. Because this club needs that.”
Manchester City’s four games remaining in the Premier League this season will begin with a home clash against Wolves this week before visiting Southampton on the south coast ahead of their FA Cup Final with Crystal Palace.
The Premier League campaign will then close out with a home clash against Bournemouth on a Tuesday night, before Manchester City travel back to the capital to take on Fulham at Craven Cottage on the final day of the league season.
