Alexander Nübel, who has been loaned to Stuttgart by FC Bayern, talks about his rival Jonas Urbig and comments on his future.
What does the future look like in goal for FC Bayern? This question also concerns Alexander Nübel. The keeper is still under contract with the record champions, but is currently on loan to VfB Stuttgart. The debates about his role and long-term prospects have been with him for a long time.
Manuel Neuer has now torn a muscle fibre in the 2:2 draw against Mainz. It remains to be seen how long the 39-year-old will be out for. One thing is clear: Jonas Urbig will come into focus and get another chance to show himself.
Nübel, who has been talked about as a potential successor for years, remains in the draw.
Urbig and Nübel recently went head-to-head in Bayern’s clear 5:0 win in Stuttgart, of all places. While the young Bayern keeper impressed, Nübel, who is on loan from the record champions, was in goal for VfB and fluffed.
Nübel now praised Urbig for his performance: „Jonas played a great game against us.“ He is unperturbed by the recurring speculation surrounding the Bayern goal: „I’ve been in soccer for a long time now and since I’ve been at Bayern, there have been rumours, speculation and duels every year – that’s completely normal,“ explained Nübel.

He is relaxed about the fact that his name regularly appears in the public eye. He is in the papers three to four times a year, but not „actively with statements“, but mostly „passively“. For him, that’s part of professional soccer. „That’s part of it,“ the goalkeeper clarified.
Nübel will continue to play for VfB Stuttgart until the end of the season, while FC Bayern set the course for the time after Neuer. It remains to be seen whether Nübel will once again play a central role or whether Urbig will move on permanently.
