The relegation run-in went down to the wire on the final day, with the Irons needing to beat Leeds United and hope that Everton defeated Tottenham in order to stay up.

The east Londoners did their bit, winning 3-0 against Leeds, but Spurs eked past the Toffees to send West Ham into the Championship.

It has concluded a hugely disappointing season for the Hammers, who saw Graham Potter replaced by Nuno back in September after a dismal start to the campaign.

"Tough, tough day for us, especially for our fans,” Nuno told Sky Sports afterwards.

If you ask me to go back to look and where and when, this is not the moment. This is the moment to feel this sadness.

"We had a tough mission, the boys tried it and today showed things could have been different. It didn't happen but at least we finished with dignity at our home. We won but it doesn't take away the sadness."

West Ham ultimately succumbed to relegation after winning just 10 of their 38 league games.

Uncertain future: Jarrod Bowen

Looking back at the season, Nuno bemoaned his side’s small mistakes that were ruthlessly punished.

"We did many things good, we did things bad and it was punished,” he continued.

“It is tough to look back at analyse. I just spoke to the boys, they are all sad and we have to go to the sadness then we think about the rest."

It remain to be seen whether the Portuguese will lead the Irons in the second tier next term, and there is uncertainty over captain Jarrod Bowen’s future.

"Our respect for the supporters means it is not the moment to talk about the future,” Nuno said.

“We have to apologise to them, thank them for the support.

"All these boys were able to establish a good relationship with the fans. They've helped us so much, even today with knowing the result, they gave us energy.

"We should understand the day, tomorrow will be a new one and we'll start thinking about what we have to do."
