Following the USMNT's World Cup campaign, which ended with a Round of 16 defeat to Belgium, many outlets have speculated that the tournament could serve as a springboard for several American players to earn moves to Europe's top leagues.
However, there is one player who has been linked with a possible move to the MLS. Let’s not be so mysterious; this footballer is Christian Pulisic, and the club that resurfaces as the top candidate is the New York City FC.
While genuine interest exists, AC Milan has made it clear that "Captain America" is not for sale.
Nevertheless, New York City FC CEO Brad Sims has reaffirmed his ambition to eventually sign Pulisic, emphasizing his consistent pursuit of the USMNT's No. 10 despite Milan’s stance.
Christian Pulisic made a flying start to the World Cup, delivering an excellent performance against Paraguay in the USMNT's opening match.
However, a calf injury limited him against Australia and Turkey. His form then dipped against Bosnia and Herzegovina and later Belgium, with the AC Milan star unable to make the same decisive impact he had in the opener.
After the rumour was spread and confirmed, NYCFC CEO Brad Sims discussed his intention during an event taking place in New York last Thursday:
“Ultimately, we’re believers that Christian is going to want to play in MLS and wants to be back home. At whatever point in time that is, we would think and hope that New York City FC would be very high on his list of teams that he would want to play for.”
There's another reason this rumor continues to gain traction: New York City FC is set to open its new stadium on July 17, 2027.
CEO Brad Sims envisions Pulisic becoming the face of that new era, much like Lionel Messi did for Inter Miami with the opening of Miami Freedom Park.
However, as exciting as that idea may be, AC Milan has already poured cold water on the speculation by making it clear that Pulisic is not for sale.
To finish explaining his wish of signing the USMNT forward, Sims said:
“If you ask any of my 29 counterparts across the league if they would be interested in having Christian Pulisic on their team, I’m pretty sure you’d get 29 yeses. It’s an easy question to answer in that regard.”
Adding: “Would we love to have him? Yes. Would any team in MLS love to have him? I’m pretty sure the answer to that would be yes. Would MLS, from a league standpoint, love to have Christian Pulisic here? I think that answer would be yes.”
