Sometimes, New York City FC will be the reason for their own downfall, and this was seen during the midweek U.S. Open Cup match. The Pigeons fell 1-0 to Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC after a late goal. The reason for their downfall was the inability to score, which has plagued the team despite a couple of wins in Major League Soccer. That is why they will try to change things around this weekend.
NYCFC will welcome CF Montréal to Yankee Stadium for what can be deemed as a should-win game. The reason is simple: the Canadian team is in last place in the Eastern Conference and is one of two teams in the league that has not won in 2025. The Bronx side does not want to be the team that hands them their first win, especially on their home pitch.
Of course, Montréal’s struggles mean nothing, for anything can happen in 90 minutes of play. That is why Pascal Jansen must unlock his team’s ability to score. Plus, last year’s Decision Day loss to the team is still fresh in the fans’ minds. NYCFC still has dominated the series over the years, for they have only lost three times in all competitions and just twice in the last ten matches.
On paper, the Pigeons should win. But they should have won against Pittsburgh, too. So, what does the team need to do to unlock their scoring boots? Some might argue that they are okay since they beat three teams 1-0 during this difficult stretch, but the argument is that two of those three wins were due to a little luck. NYCFC might have played well against FC Cincinnati, but the scoring struggles were on display in the U.S. Open Cup. More losses like that can occur if they continue down this path.

After Pascal Jansen heavily rotated the squad in the midweek game, fans should expect most of the usual NYCFC starters to start against Montréal.
