During the week, New York City FC suffered an awful loss to Inter Miami CF. The Pigeons were doing an okay job, but missed chances in the first half, and some intriguing choices by Pascal Jansen in the second ultimately led to the loss. Alas, the team cannot sit on the disaster since they have another quick turnaround. The Hudson River Derby is next, and this is now a must-win game.
NYCFC won the home fixture back in May, beating the New York Red Bulls 2-0. It was their revenge after the rivals beat them in the postseason last year, knocking them out of the MLS Cup Playoffs despite sweeping the 2024 regular season. But can they head to Sports Illustrated Stadium, formerly known as Red Bull Arena, and earn the sweep again?
That is to be determined. However, one could argue that the Pigeons are in a better spot compared to RBNY. Yes, they suffered the awful loss to Miami and have lost to teams this year that they should beat as well, like D.C. United. But NYCFC is in fifth place while the red side is in tenth, with ten points separating them. Moreover, the team from Queens is 5-2-0 since Major League Soccer resumed after the Leagues Cup. The other team is 3-2-1.
Nevertheless, the upcoming match is crucial for the Boys in Blue. There are three games left in the regular season, and each one is challenging. Since the Red Bulls sit at the lowest in the table compared to the other remaining teams, it is vital that NYCFC wins. Oh, and it is the Hudson River Derby. The only true New York MLS side must remind everyone that New York is blue.

As mentioned, Jansen played a big part in NYCFC’s 4-0 loss during the week. He took out Thiago Martins and did not replace him with a proper defender. Hence, awful managerial mistakes cannot be made, especially in the Hudson River Derby.
