Vargas, 21, was born in Alaska, is of Mexican descent and holds dual United States and Mexican nationality, and will also have a Spanish passport soon. He featured at the last World Cup for Mexico.

On the second of February, Vargas signed for Atlético until 2030. The club paid three million to Seattle Sounders.

Last season he made 12 La Liga appearances for Atlético, starting in four. This term Diego Simeone has not included him in the squad for the opening three league matches.

Atlético plan to loan him out to gain experience, with Valencia, Sevilla, Alavés and Málaga all showing interest. The prospect of European football with Getafe in the Conference League, and the possibility of continuing to live in Madrid, means both Vargas and Atlético prefer a move to Getafe this season.
