Grêmio president Odorico Roman has reiterated his backing for head coach Luís Castro after Saturday’s 0-0 Gre-Nal, describing 2026 as a transitional year and underlining that Castro will lead the project.
According to Globo.com, the draw marked a fifth straight match without a win, the club’s worst run of the year, with two draws and three defeats. The most recent loss came last week against Montevideo Torque City in the Copa Sudamericana in Uruguay.
Roman said the board retains full conviction in Castro and that the work is progressing as expected. He explained the coach was chosen to build a competitive side and to integrate academy talent into the first team throughout the current administration.
On expectations for 2026, Roman said he never promised titles. He characterised the season as one of reconstruction, financially and on the pitch, with targeted signings and a hard reset of the squad to re-establish the club’s capacity to invest.
Addressing recruitment, he said Grêmio would only move in the next window if needed, adding he does not sell illusions and has been clear about financial constraints. He noted the initial outlay this year was significant.
Winless in five, Grêmio return to action on Tuesday with their home debut in the Copa Sudamericana against Depotivo Riestra of Argentina.
