Newcastle United have gone in with a formal offer for Belgian winger Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who is on the books at French side Lille.
Fernandez-Pardo, 21, is keen to move on from Lille before the transfer window slams shut at the start of September.
Atletico Madrid have been showing interest in taking Fernandez-Pardo to La Liga, however Lille president Olivier Letang would rather keep hold of the attacker this summer.
Now Letang’s stance will be tested further as Newcastle have entered the mix to try to sign Fernandez-Pardo.
According to French sports daily L’Equipe, Newcastle have now made a formal offer for Fernandez-Pardo, which has come in at around €40m, excluding bonuses.

Formal talks are ongoing and it is suggested that because Newcastle have greater financial resources than Atletico Madrid, their proposal could give Lille ‘pause for thought’.
Newcastle want to make a number of signings before the transfer window slams shut and snapping up Fernandez-Pardo would be an impressive move.
The winger is a senior Belgium international and has shone at Lille, who he joined from Gent in 2024.
Now Newcastle will hope that, if not accepted, the bid still opens the door enough to make a move for the Belgian possible this summer.

Matthias Jaissle’s men are also advancing on other fronts and are close to agreeing a fee with Manchester City for midfielder Nico Gonzalez.
Newcastle are keen for an experienced head in the engine room and feel that former FC Porto man Gonzalez fits the bill.
They also recently tried to hijack RB Leipzig’s swoop for forward Christopher Nkunku, but failed.
Unlike Atletico Madrid, Newcastle do not have Champions League football, or any European football, to offer to Fernandez-Pardo, but will hope to sell the dream of being part of a St James’ Park rebuild.
