Bayer Leverkusen confirm that Alejandro Grimaldo has left the club after three successful seasons, joining Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid for a reported €20m.

The Spaniard joined Leverkusen from Benfica in 2023 on a free transfer, establishing himself as a crucial member of Xabi Alonso’s side that won the Bundesliga, going undefeated throughout the season, and the DFB Pokal double during the 2023/24 season.

In total, Grimaldo won three trophies with Leverkusen and scored 30 goals as well as providing 45 assists in 145 appearances. He is known for his speciality in set pieces and ability to play in various positions in addition to his regular full-back role. The 30-year-old can be deployed as either a left-back or a wing-back in addition to being able to play further up the pitch. 

It has been reported by Spanish media that Grimaldo has signed a four-year contract as he becomes the first signing of the summer for Atlético Madrid.
