FC Barcelona have officially announced that their first UEFA Champions League home game of the season, against trophy-holders Paris Saint-Germain, will be played at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys in Montjuic.

“FC Barcelona announces that the second match of the Champions League group stage, on Wednesday, October 1, at 9:00 p.m., against Paris Saint-Germain, will be played at the Estadi Lluís Companys Olimpic,” the club statement read.

The plan had been to have the game at Spotify Camp Nou, but the Catalans have yet to obtain the necessary permits and licences to reopen the stadium.

Even if they manage to get the issues sorted in time to play Real Sociedad on 28 September, hosting a Champions League game would still not be possible due to UEFA’s stricter regulations.

As such, UEFA had already updated the information about the PSG game being played at the Montjuic Stadium on their official website, with Barcelona now confirming the same.

The hope is to play the subsequent home games in the competition at Camp Nou, with UEFA willing to allow changing stadiums midway through the league phase despite it being against the rules.

“The Club continues to work intensively to obtain the necessary administrative permits for the opening of the Spotify Camp Nou in the coming months,” the club statement further noted.

“FC Barcelona would like to thank its members and fans for their understanding and support throughout such a complex and exciting process as the return to the new Spotify Camp Nou.”
