FC Barcelona have come out swinging after new reports linked to a complaint filed with Spain’s National Court targeted Joan Laporta and several figures within the current leadership structure.
As reported before, a club member had taken legal action, accusing Laporta and other executives of alleged financial crimes, including money laundering and the receipt of undue commissions.
However, within the club, the reaction has been immediate and forceful.
With Rafael Yuste serving as acting president during the election period, Barcelona released a detailed statement rejecting the credibility of the material underpinning the complaint.
According to the club, the allegations are not new. In fact, they claim the same documentation had already circulated weeks earlier and had been examined internally.
The statement explains that in mid-January, journalists and the Organised Crime & Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) approached Barcelona to validate documents supposedly supporting these claims.
Rather than dismissing them outright, the club says it triggered both internal and external review mechanisms to evaluate their authenticity.
The conclusion, as described by Barcelona, was definitive. The documents were labelled “implausible and unrelated to reality,” with the club stating they appeared “false or seriously manipulated.”
“The Club is unaware of the details of the claim presented, which is referenced in the story in question, although the details published coincide with the information that the Club refuted expressly on 19 January 2026.”
Crucially, the club also revealed that other national media outlets were presented with the same material.
According to Barça, those outlets refrained from publishing after identifying inconsistencies and possible signs of falsification.
While the leadership insists it does not yet know the full legal content of the complaint currently before the National Court, it believes the accusations mirror what was already dismissed internally.
If that connection is confirmed, Barcelona have warned they will escalate the matter legally.
“The Club will make available to the Electoral Committee all the information in its possession on this matter for them to verify the situation and warn the precandidate of the consequences of using false information and news stories during the electoral process.”
The club is also prepared to involve its Disciplinary Committee to investigate the member responsible and is evaluating whether steps should be taken against the outlet that published the claims despite being aware of the club’s position.
Beyond the legal dimension, Barcelona have also forwarded the case to the Electoral Board, arguing that the timing of the publication raises questions.
The statement subtly suggests the possibility of “an illegitimate attempt to disrupt the normal democratic process” during a sensitive campaign period.
