In a concerning bit of development, Barcelona midfielder Dani Olmo has been ruled out of next week’s UEFA Champions League clash against SL Benfica due to a muscle injury.
Issuing a statement, the Blaugrana confirmed: “Barça player Dani Olmo has a right soleus strain. He is out for the next match and his return will be determined by his recovery.”
The 26-year-old summer signing suffered a physical setback during last night’s La Liga encounter against Getafe.
After the match, the former RB Leipzig attacking midfielder complained of muscular discomfort, which was subsequently examined today at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper.
This muscular issue, combined with the quick turnaround for the match against Benfica, has seen him get ruled out of the contest against Benfica.
Barcelona are scheduled to travel to Lisbon tomorrow for the penultimate match of the Champions League group stage, to be played the following day at the Da Luz stadium.
Olmo had a history of muscle problems for a large part of his stint at RB Leipzig. The Spanish international was also out for more than a month earlier this season after signing for Barcelona.
Indeed, the midfielder missed eight games for club and country between September and October and now is facing another stint on the sidelines.
The update from Barcelona does not mention a recovery timeline for the midfielder and it remains to be seen if he recovers in time for next weekend’s La Liga match against Valencia.
