Barcelona have long been known for weaving smart clauses into their deals, small details that can pay off handsomely later. One of their favourite tricks is holding on to a slice of a player’s rights, a quiet investment that sometimes delivers when least expected.
Francisco Trincao’s story fits the bill perfectly. Arriving from Braga in the summer of 2020 for a fee in the region of €30 million, the Portuguese winger lasted just a single season at Camp Nou before being loaned to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2021.
He returned a year later, only to find himself heading out again, this time to Sporting CP on a season-long loan. His performances in Lisbon convinced the club to make the move partially permanent, securing 50 percent of his rights for around €7 million while Barcelona held on to the rest.
That decision has now paid off once more. Sporting CP have returned to complete the deal, as confirmed in an official statement by FC Barcelona, purchasing the remaining 50 percent of Trincao’s rights.
While the Catalan club has not disclosed the exact figure, a recent report from Mundo Deportivo suggests it is around €11 million, which brings their total earnings from his move to the Lisbon side to approximately €18 million.
When adding the €3 million collected from his loan spell at Sporting in 2022 and the €6 million earned from his loan to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2021, Trincao’s time on Barça’s books has generated roughly €27 million in total.
It still falls short of the near €31 million the club paid to sign him from Braga in 2020, but given the circumstances, this final instalment arrives as a timely boost.
With the new La Liga season just hours away and key signings yet to be registered, the cash injection offers Barcelona valuable breathing space.
If the report is accurate, this amount is certainly significant and will be highly useful for the Catalan club. With player registrations still pending, it could go a long way toward helping Barcelona complete several ongoing operations.
